
The aim of the Protein Kinase Database Project (PKDBP) project is to
develope a
resource that provides the user with a
compendium of current information on protein kinases, derived from a broad spectrum
of information sources and formats. Information access is designed around a
user-friendly, graphical interface that allows the user to browse or search
transparently (that is, providing access to information from various electronic
resources; web sites, gopher holes, e-newsgroups, ftp archives, databases,
search engines, etc., and information formats; audio, graphical, textual,
numerical).
The ultimate goal of this project is to develope a model scientific information
system that can be applied to other sets of biological data. A natural extension
of our work on protein kinases would be the creation of another
information system focused on protein phoshatases. Ideally we hope the model
we create here can be extended to other protein groups and other forms of
biological data.
Functions of the resource are to provide:
- an alternative mode for "publication" of research results and
a mechanism whereby researchers can receive recognition for their
contributions,
- a user-friendly mechanism (web browser) to access a variety of information
regardlesss of that information's location and electronic format,
- a mechanism to integrate various local and remote information
resources (textual, graphical, numerical)
- creation of a repository of information that is not available via current
public databases.
