Research activities
This Division consists of three laboratories:
( 1 ) The laboratory of molecular nutrition (chief: Akiyo MATSUMOTO, Shinji IKEMOTO)
( 2 ) The laboratory of metabolic disorders (chief: Osamu EZAKI)
( 3 ) The laboratory of clinical nutrition (chief: Kazuo KONDO)
The main studies conducted by this Division in 1993 are as fllows:
1. Studies on the structure of human scavenger receptor gene and the mechanism of foam cell
formation. Promoter region of human scavenger receptor gene was analysed.
2. The restricted fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of apolipoprotein Al and B genes were
analysed using polymerase chain reaction. Genotypes of some polymorphic site of apo Al gene and
apo B gene ware compered with levels of serum lipids.
3. Studies on the individual responses by fat load. Serum triglyceride elevations after fat load were
observed to be different by genotypes.
4 . Studies on insulin-mediated signal transduction and function of glucose transporters. Analysis of
the loration of the expression of GLUT 4 in 3 T 3 -L 1 cells and transgenic mice.
5. Studies on reverse cholesterol transport system and Lp (a), Mutants of cholesterol ester transfer
protein gene are analysed and observed to be associated with elevation of HDL cholesterol levels.
6. Studies on nutritional problems in Asian countries. These studies are going to be conducted
collaborated with foreign researchers.
